Work with Young People
Stories of Our Island
Island young people participate in weekly theatre sessions in acting, improvisation, stiltwalking, acrobatics, video making and music. TheStories of Our Island program is directed by Anne Barber with guest artists. It creates a place for self-expression, learning theatre skills and connecting with each other.
Regular Monday night sessions have created music videos, mummer's plays and masked performances for indoors and on the streets.
Our dynamic stiltwalkers are often seen at festivals and street parties around the city entertaining crowds with high-flying performances of beauty and daring.
Kensington Market Festival of Lights
The Island Mummer's Play is a seasonal offering created by the Shadowland Youth Troupe and performed around the solstice and during the holiday festivities.
Outrageous costumed performers, accompanied by musicians, entertain the crowds with a cast of characters from the ancient mumming tradition. The Ice Queen defeats the Sun King, the quack Doctor’s crazy antics offer no cure, only the warm breath of a sick dragon or a herbal brew will revive the King so that Spring can come again. Audiences rejoice in anticipation of the growing of the light and the knowledge that the cycle of life conntimues.
Performances take place at the fabulous Kensington Festival of Lights, produced by Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, at the St. Lawrence Market for holiday shoppers and at Toronto Island's Wassail at St. Andrew's-by-the-Lake.
Young Islanders have been centrally involved in the development and performance of Shadowland’s large-scale summer productions.
Shadowland artists have many years of experience conducting workshops for young people in schools, community centres and in collaboration with other organizations.
