Shadowland Theatre’s primary focus is to work with a wide range of communities to unearth their distinctive histories, create new stories and celebrate special events. We are known for animating streets, parks, and communities with our bold design sensibility and raucous theatricality. Community collaborations can take place over a number of weeks or months, culminating in large-scale, outdoor shows that leave a legacy of skills and inspiration. Shadowland works in rural and urban landscapes, and has a strong commitment to environmentally-themed, site-engaged work that connects us to the rhythms of our natural world.

Training and Mentorship Opportunities
Shadowland is committed to the development of artistic practice, particularly amongst young people. Each year we provide training and summer employment for students who are thrown into the full creative process. We offer long-term internships and a more intensive training for those entering the community-engaged, performing arts field.

Youth Programming
We offer opportunities for young people to express themselves through theatre arts. Weekly theatre sessions on Toronto Island produce an annual Mummers play in December, stilt performances and video works. Shadowland artists have run over 200 residencies in Ontario schools for Grades 4 through high school. These programs in mask, puppetry and performance offer a combination of visual and performing arts to suit a wide range of learners’ interests and abilities.

Workshops
Shadowland artists run workshops and extended residencies for community members/animators, emerging and practicing artists, learners of all ages, including youth, newcomers, and seniors. We are available for workshops in: shadow, rod and hand puppetry; mask-making; stilt-walking; giant puppet construction; parade arts; lantern-making, and more. We collaborate with Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers to bring that perspective into our work. Shadowland partners with a wide range of cultural and community organizations in schools, parks, and community centres, or wherever people gather. We provide high level, practical training with transferable skills, instructional take-aways, and insights into the concepts and philosophy of our work.

Design
Shadowland’s unique design sensibility has graced the stages of many other companies including – Cinetic Creations, Sheatre, Theatre Direct, VideoCabaret, and others. Our lead designer, Brad Harley, is renown for his bold, expressive style, a fearless interest in building mechanical contraptions, and the ability to form simple cardboard into dramatic sets and props.
