Hansel and gretel

Created by Shadowland Theatre with a host of community performers.

This new take on the old tale combined the music of Brecht and Weill’s Threepenny Opera and the musings of Sigmund Freud with Shadowland’s theatre of spectacle, humour and site-specific performance. Bird flu deprives the family of their livelihood, a job fair offers only the worst options, and the deep, dark woods are no sanctuary for deserted children. Hansel and Gretel find their inner powers to defeat a culinary-challenged Witch and release the powerful Raven in a stunning finale.

Shadowland returned to the Toronto Islands with an outdoor, all-ages, processional cabaret performance. This was a darkly humorous take on the legendary coming-of-age, fairy tale from the Grimm Brothers. Hansel and Gretel – A Case Study wove through the Ward's Island landscape, taking audiences into the deep, dark forests of their imagination. August 2013.
