Coming right up!

Hansel & Gretel: The Fast Food Version

Hansel and Gretel's dysfunctional parents can't keep up with their bills and the sub-prime mortgage payments. The children are sent out into the deep, dark, super-sized world where a Happy-Ever-After-Meal is not at all what it seems.

Shadowland is performing this Punch and Judy-style puppet version of the Grimm tale at the following events:

  • Saturday and Sunday Sept. 3rd & 4th at the LabCab Festival at Factory Theatre (Adelaide and Bathurst). Performances at 12.45, 3.30 and 5.15pm. FREE. map
  • Monday September 12th at Sorauren Farmers Market, Sorauren Park, performances between 4pm and 7pm. FREE. (Donations welcome) map

Hansel and GretelHansel and Gretel: A Case Study
A radical new take on an old tale.

The acclaimed Shadowland Theatre returned to the Toronto Islands this past August with an outdoor, all-ages, processional cabaret performance of Hansel and Gretel – A Case Study, a darkly humorous take on the legendary coming-of- age German fairy tale from the Grimm Brothers. Hansel and Gretel – A Case Study wove through Ward's Island August 9 to August 14, taking audiences into the deep, dark forests of their imagination.

Combining live music from Brecht and Weill's The Threepenny Opera, Shadowland's theatre of spectacle, song and site-specific performance revealed the deeper meaning in the Hansel and Gretel rite of passage tale – with the help of none other than Sigmund Freud for a triple deutsch black forest treat!

Hansel and Gretel is a beloved children's story (albeit filled with some dodgy themes!). Hansel and Gretel – A Case Study is a true family show: youngsters fly the coop, are exiled into the deep, dark woods and forced to grow up; adults struggle for survival, and the voracious forces of temptation and excess vie with those of hunger and desperation. more

Marion Lewis and Lorraine Pelletier appeared in Hansel and Gretel: A Case Study with the permission of Canadian Actors' Equity Association.
